About Painted Zodiac

Painted Zodiac sells fine art of the twelve signs, painted new and held to the way the old star atlases drew them: Johann Bayer's Uranometria of 1603, Johannes Hevelius' Firmamentum of 1690, the Urania's Mirror cards of 1824, and the calendar pages of the Très Riches Heures. Beside the new work hang 36 of the historical plates themselves, printed as the engravers left them.

The new paintings are made with AI image models, directed by us, and each of the twelve keeps the iconography of a real plate: the ram looking back over its shoulder, Capricorn's goat fore and fish tail, Virgo holding the wheat-ear that is the star Spica. Each sign's page names its plate and its brightest star, with the Bayer designation and the Hipparcos magnitude. Nothing on a sign's page is invented.

An honest note on the medium. The engraved plates in the Archive were cut by hand, line by line, and they carry something a model has not matched and may never match. That is why they are sold here too, unaltered, rather than repainted.

The Archive plates are public-domain scans held by Wikimedia Commons, the Wellcome Collection and the Library of Congress. Each plate's page names its source. Where colour has been added to a plate, the piece is labelled an Illumination and says so.
